Building Confidence as a New Doula

February 03, 20251 min read

Let’s face it—starting out as a new doula can feel overwhelming. You’ve got the training, you’ve got the passion, but do you have the confidence? If you’re nodding your head and thinking, “Not quite yet,” you’re not alone. Confidence doesn’t happen overnight, but the good news is it’s absolutely something you can build.

1. Trust Your Training

You’ve put in the time and effort to learn the skills needed to be a doula. Trust that training! You don’t need to know everything on day one. Remember, every doula—even the most experienced ones—started where you are now.

2. Lean on Your Mentors

If you’re feeling uncertain, don’t hesitate to reach out to mentors or seasoned doulas. Their experience and advice can be a great confidence booster. Plus, they’ve likely been in your shoes and know exactly how to help.

3. Practice Makes Progress

Confidence comes from doing. The more you work with clients, the more comfortable you’ll feel. Start small if needed, perhaps by shadowing another doula or volunteering your services to gain experience. Every birth, every consultation, every conversation will build your skills—and your confidence.

4. Remember Your Why

Why did you become a doula? Was it to support families, make a difference, or follow your passion? Whenever you feel doubt creeping in, go back to your why. It’s a powerful motivator that can help you push past insecurities.

5. Celebrate the Little Wins

Maybe your first birth went perfectly, or maybe it didn’t—and that’s okay! Celebrate the moments where you showed up, supported your client, or learned something new. Confidence grows when you recognize your own progress.

Being a new doula is a journey, but with every step, you’re becoming more confident and capable. You’ve got this!
